ANSI Grades
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) grades hardware based on operational tests, cycles, and security resistance.
- Grade 1: Commercial heavy-duty. Tested for 1 million cycles. Required for high-traffic public buildings.
- Grade 2: Commercial standard / Residential heavy-duty. Tested for 400,000 cycles.
- Grade 3: Residential standard. Tested for 200,000 cycles. Not recommended for exterior security.
Mortise vs. Cylindrical Locks
Strike Plates & Escutcheons
Strike Plate: The metal plate affixed to the door jamb with a hole for the bolt of the door. A heavy-duty strike plate secured with 3-inch screws into the wall stud is the #1 defense against kick-ins.
Escutcheon: The decorative or protective plate that surrounds the lock cylinder and handle on the face of the door. Security escutcheons prevent wrenching and drilling attacks against the cylinder.
Access Control Systems
Electronic systems that manage who can enter a space and when. Components typically include readers (keypad, fob, biometrics), electronic strikes or maglocks, and a central controller or cloud-based software tracking audit trails.
